Auch das Gewissen der Intellektuellen "globalisiert" sich. Spätestens mit der "Erfindung" der Weltsozialforen und der Synchronisierung des weltweiten Protestes gegen den Irakkrieg mit den größten Friedensdemonstrationen am 15. Februar 2003 haben sich auch weltbekannte Intellektuelle, Schriftsssteller, Wissenschaftler, Filmregisseure, Musiker, Künstler gefunden, um immer wieder ihre Stimme zu erheben, wenn schreiende Ungerechtigkeiten, Kriege und andere von Menschen verursachte Katastrophen dazu Anlass geben.
Der israelische Vormarsch im Gazastreifen und der beginnende Luftkrieg im Libanon bewogen 15 prominente Intellektuelle zu einem Offenen Brief, den wir im Folgenden in vier Sprachen dokumentieren:

A letter from Chomsky and others on the recent events in the Middle East
The latest chapter of the conflict between Israel and Palestine began when Israeli forces abducted two civilians, a doctor and his brother, from Gaza. An incident scarcely reported anywhere, except in the Turkish press. The following day the Palestinians took an Israeli soldier prisoner - and proposed a negotiated exchange against prisoners taken by the Israelis - there are approximately 10,000 in Israeli jails.That this "kidnapping" was considered an outrage, whereas the illegal military occupation of the West Bank and the systematic appropriation of its natural resources - most particularly that of water - by the Israeli Defence (!) Forces is considered a regrettable but realistic fact of life, is typical of the double standards repeatedly employed by the West in face of what has befallen the Palestinians, on the land alloted to them by international agreements, during the last seventy years.
Today outrage follows outrage; makeshift missiles cross sophisticated ones. The latter usually find their target situated where the disinherited and crowded poor live, waiting for what was once called Justice. Both categories of missile rip bodies apart horribly - who but field commanders can forget this for a moment?
Each provocation and counter-provocation is contested and preached over. But the subsequent arguments, accusations and vows, all serve as a distraction in order to divert world attention from a long-term military, economic and geographic practice whose political aim is nothing less than the liquidation of the Palestinian nation.
This has to be said loud and clear for the practice, only half declared and often covert, is advancing fast these days, and, in our opinion, it must be unceasingly and eternally recognised for what it is and resisted.

Ein Brief von Chomsky und anderen zu den jüngsten Ereignissen im Nahen Osten
Das jüngste Kapitel im Konflikt zwischen Israel und Palästina begann, als israelische Sicherheitskräfte zwei Zivilisten aus Gaza entführten, einen Arzt und seinen Bruder. Über diesen Vorfall wurde beinahe nirgends berichtet, außer in der türkischen Presse. Am folgenden Tag nahmen die Palästinenser einen israelischen Soldaten gefangen und schlugen einen Austausch gegen Häftlinge der Israelis vor - davon gibt es etwa 10.000 in israelischen Gefängnissen.Dieses "Kidnapping" wurde als Verbrechen betrachtet, während die illegale Besatzung der Westbank und die systematische Aneignung der dortigen natürlichen Ressourcen - vor allem des Wassers - durch die Israelischen Verteidigungs-(!)kräfte als bedauerliche, aber unabwendbare Tatsache gilt. Dies ist typisch für die wiederholt vom Westen verwendeten doppelten Standards angesichts dessen, was den Palästinensern auf dem ihnen durch internationale Verreinbarungen zugesprochenen Territorium in den letzten siebzig Jahren angetan wurde.
Heute folgt Gewalttat auf Gewalttat; behelfsmäßige Raketen kreuzen den Weg von hoch entwickelten Raketen. Letztere finden ihr Ziel üblicherweise dort, wo die enterbten und zusammengepferchten Armen leben und auf etwas warten, das man einst Gerechtigkeit nannte. Beide Arten von Raketen zerreißen auf schreckliche Weise Körper - wer außer Feldkommandanten könnte das auch nur für einen Moment vergessen?
Über jede Provokation und Gegenprovokation wird gestritten und gepredigt. Aber alle darauf folgenden Argumente, Beschuldigungen und Schwüre dienen nur dazu, die Aufmerksamkeit der Welt von einer lange währenden militärischen, ökonomischen und geografischen Praxis abzulenken, deren politisches Ziel in nicht weniger als der Auflösung der palästinensischen Nation besteht.
Dies muss laut und deutlich gesagt werden, da diese Praxis - nur halb angekündigt und oft geheim - in diesen Tagen schnell voran schreitet. Nach unserer Meinung muss sie unaufhörlich und ewig als das, was sie ist, erkannt und bekämpft werden.

Le dernier épisode du conflit entre Israël et la Palestine s’est ouvert avec l’enlèvement à Gaza de deux civils, un médecin et son frère, par les forces israéliennes. Un incident mentionné nulle part, sauf dans la presse turque. Le lendemain, les Palestiniens capturèrent un soldat israélien, puis proposèrent d’en négocier l’échange contre un certain nombre de prisonniers palestiniens – ils sont environ 10 000 dans les prisons israéliennes.Que l’« enlèvement » d’un soldat israélien soit considéré comme un scandale alors que l’occupation militaire illégale de la Cisjordanie et l’appropriation systématique de ses ressources naturelles – en particulier de son eau – par les forces de défense (!) israéliennes sont acceptées comme un fait certes regrettable mais objectif : voilà qui est typique de la politique du deux poids, deux mesures que l’Occident pratique de façon systématique devant ce qu’endurent, depuis soixante-dix ans, les Palestiniens sur des terres qui leur ont été allouées par des accords internationaux.
Aujourd’hui, les scandales se répondent ; des missiles artisanaux croisent en plein vol des engins autrement sophistiqués. Ces derniers vont généralement atteindre leur objectif dans des zones où les plus déshérités s’entassent en attendant ce qu’on appelait autrefois la Justice. Les deux sortes de missiles déchiquettent les corps de façon tout aussi horrible – qui, hormis les chefs militaires, pourrait l’oublier un seul instant ?
Chaque provocation et contre-provocation est montée en épingle et donne lieu à des leçons de morale. Mais les débats qui en résultent, les accusations et les serments ne servent qu’à détourner l’attention du monde d’une pratique militaire, économique et géographique à long terme dont l’objectif politique n’est rien moins que la liquidation de la nation palestinienne.
Cela doit être dit à haute et intelligible voix car ladite pratique, seulement exprimée à demi-mot et souvent exécutée secrètement, progresse rapidement ces jours-ci, et c’est un devoir, à notre avis, que de lui résister et de la dénoncer sans cesse et toujours pour ce qu’elle est.

Una carta de Chomsky y otros intelectuales sobre la crisis del Medio Oriente
Hoy día una barbaridad es seguida por otra; misiles improvisados se cruzan con otros sofisticados. Estos últimos encuentran normalmente su blanco en lugares poblados por los desheredados, por los pobres que esperan por aquello que una vez se llamó justicia.El último capítulo del conflicto entre Israel y Palestina se inició cuando tropas israelíes secuestraron en Gaza a dos civiles, un doctor y su hermano. Se trató de un incidente escasamente divulgado, excepto por la prensa turca. Al día siguiente los palestinos hicieron prisionero a un soldado israelí, y propusieron intercambiarlo por palestinos hechos prisioneros por los israelíes — hay aproximadamente 10,000 palestinos en las cárceles de Israel.
Que ese secuestro fuera considerado una barbaridad, mientras la ocupación militar ilegal de la Franja Oeste y la apropiación sistemática de sus recursos naturales — muy particularmente del agua — por parte de las Fuerzas de Defensa Israelíes sea considerado un hecho lamentable pero ineludible, es típico de la doble moral aplicada reiteradamente por el Occidente de cara a la situación de los palestinos en los territorios que les fueran asignados mediante acuerdos internacionales durante los últimos 70 años.
Hoy día una barbaridad es seguida por otra; misiles improvisados se cruzan con otros sofisticados. Estos últimos encuentran normalmente su blanco en lugares poblados por los desheredados, por los pobres que esperan por aquello que una vez se llamó justicia. Ambos tipos de misiles destrozan horriblemente los cuerpos. ¿Quiénes, si no los comandantes del campo de batalla, podrían ignorar eso por un momento?
Cada provocación y contra provocación es cuestionada y se moraliza al respecto. Pero los argumentos, acusaciones y promesas subsiguientes sólo sirven como distracción, para desviar la atención del mundo de una práctica militar, geográfica y económica a largo plazo, cuyo objetivo político no es más que la liquidación de la nación palestina.
Esto tiene que denunciarse con vehemencia y claridad puesto que la práctica, declarada a medias solamente y a menudo clandestina, está avanzando rápido últimamente, y, en nuestra opinión, debe ser incesante y eternamente reconocida por lo que es y resistida.

War crimes and Lebanon

The US-backed Israeli assault on Lebanon has left the country numb, smouldering and angry. The massacre in Qana and the loss of life is not simply "disproportionate". It is, according to existing international laws, a war crime.
The deliberate and systematic destruction of Lebanon's social infrastructure by the Israeli air force was also a war crime, designed to reduce that country to the status of an Israeli-US protectorate. The attempt has backfired. In Lebanon itself, 87% of the population now support Hizbullah's resistance, including 80% of Christian and Druze and 89% of Sunni Muslims, while 8% believe the US supports Lebanon. But these actions will not be tried by any court set up by the "international community" since the US and its allies that commit or are complicit in these appalling crimes will not permit it.
It has now become clear that the assault on Lebanon to wipe out Hizbullah had been prepared long before. Israel's crimes had been given a green light by the US and its loyal British ally, despite the opposition to Blair in his own country. v In short, the peace that Lebanon enjoyed has come to an end, and a paralysed country is forced to remember a past it had hoped to forget. The state terror inflicted on Lebanon is being repeated in the Gaza ghetto, while the "international community" stands by and watches in silence. Meanwhile, the rest of Palestine is annexed and dismantled with the direct participation of the US and the tacit approval of its allies.
We offer our solidarity and support to the victims of this brutality and to those who mount a resistance against it. For our part, we will use all the means at our disposal to expose the complicity of our governments in these crimes. There will be no peace in the Middle East while the occupations of Palestine and Iraq and the temporarily "paused" bombings of Lebanon continue.

As our political leaders argue over the difference between a "cessation of hostilities" and a "ceasefire", more and more children die. The British government (unlike the US) has agreed to be bound by the UN convention on the rights of the child. This is a legally enforceable international treaty which enshrines the "right to life" as one of its four core principles. I would be very interested to know how the government justifies its actions in relation to its responsibilities under the convention and why our new children's commissioners have remained silent on what appears to be a flagrant disregard of children's rights, as well as a breach of our international obligations.
